Joseph Chirwa is a member of the School Management Committee (SMC) for Mbulunji Primary School in Rumphi District who often conducts monitoring visits of tablet learning sessions at the school.

Joseph is one of the stakeholders who proclaim that the tablet learning sessions that were introduced under the Building Education Foundations through Innovation and Technology (BEFIT) Programme have significantly led to positive learning outcomes at the school. Chirwa further explained that most learners are now thinking quickly and are able to solve complex problems. Additionally, he said the sessions have also significantly increased learners’ interest in education to the extent that the issue of absenteeism is no longer a concern.

“Before the BEFIT programme, learners used to have challenges with foundational literacy and numeracy. However, the cohorts of leaners who are benefiting from the tablet learning session are not facing such learning challenges,” narrated Joseph.

Joseph said he firmly believes that tablet-based learning is helping children to know a lot and he explained that the exposure to technology will make them easily understand how other technological gadgets, like computers, work.

I would like to urge the Malawi government and all implementing agencies to ensure that the programme is benefitting more children by swiftly scaling up the intervention to all primary schools in the country.

The BEFIT is a government of Malawi-led programme enhancing literacy and numeracy skills for learners in Standards 1-4 across all public primary schools through supplemental, individualized, self-paced instruction through an Android tablet-based app.
